China and Brazil marked a significant milestone on Wednesday, celebrating 50 years of diplomatic relations with a vibrant cultural exchange event in Brasília. The occasion drew messages of goodwill and aspirations for a strengthened partnership between the two nations.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva sent a heartfelt congratulatory letter. He emphasized the importance of the event, which coincided with Chinese President Xi Jinping’s participation in the 19th G20 Summit and his state visit to Brazil. President Lula highlighted how cultural initiatives like this deepen the longstanding bond between China and Brazil. He noted China’s vital role as Brazil’s leading economic and trade partner and expressed his eagerness to enhance their comprehensive strategic partnership.
Brazil’s Vice President, Geraldo Alckmin, who also serves as the Minister of Development, Industry, Trade, and Services, addressed the gathering. He pointed out that 2024 marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries. Alckmin reaffirmed Brazil’s commitment to advancing agreements made by the leaders of both nations, emphasizing the expansion of cooperation in all areas, including culture. He voiced Brazil’s readiness to collaborate with Chinese media outlets to share stories of mutual growth and foster a community with a shared future.
Shen Haixiong, Vice Minister of the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and President of China Media Group (CMG), spoke highly of the enduring partnership. He described it as a model of cooperation between developing nations. Shen expressed CMG’s dedication to enhancing cultural exchanges and mutual understanding, calling the 50th anniversary both a milestone and a new starting point for even stronger ties. He pledged to work alongside Brazilian partners to elevate their comprehensive strategic partnership and usher in a “golden 50 years” ahead.
The event featured the signing of four cooperation agreements between CMG and Brazilian entities during President Xi’s visit. CMG also exchanged cooperation documents with the Rio de Janeiro International Film Festival, aiming to boost cinematic cultural exchanges. An exhibition showcasing Chinese film and television programs was launched, highlighting the richness of Chinese culture and the vibrancy of contemporary China. Additionally, a special program list celebrating the diplomatic milestone was unveiled, featuring documentaries and animated works.
A joint public opinion survey released at the event revealed strong sentiments of partnership between the nations. According to the survey conducted by CMG and a Brazilian think tank, 86.4% of respondents view China and Brazil as close partners, while 95.6% appreciate China’s contributions to the global economy.
Concluding the celebration, a Brazilian youth orchestra performed traditional Brazilian songs. The orchestra had previously played for Peng Liyuan, President Xi’s wife, during the 2019 BRICS Summit in Brasília. Their performance symbolized the enduring and vibrant friendship between China and Brazil, resonating with hopes for a future filled with collaboration and shared prosperity.
