Hainan Island, China — At the 2024 Hainan Island International Film Festival, renowned Italian cinematographer Paolo Carnera shared insights into his creative process, his love for global cinema, and the exciting potential for collaboration between China and Italy.
In an exclusive conversation with CGTN’s Zhang Meng, Carnera expressed his admiration for the festival’s celebration of diverse cultures. “The variety of cultures represented here is astounding,” he said. “It’s a place where mutual learning enriches the filmmaking process.”
Having collaborated with international talents like the legendary Zhang Yimou, Carnera is passionate about building bridges between Eastern and Western cinema. “Chinese culture is vast and fascinating,” he remarked. “It would be a great opportunity for Chinese filmmakers to come to Italy, and for us to work together to create something truly unique.”
Carnera believes that such collaborations can push the boundaries of storytelling. “There’s so much we can learn from each other,” he added. “By combining our strengths, we can create films that resonate with audiences around the world.”
