Leaders and experts from China and Southeast Asian nations gathered in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, on Monday for a groundbreaking symposium on artificial intelligence (AI) cooperation. The event aimed to harness AI’s potential for sustainable socio-economic development across the region.
Cambodian Permanent Deputy Prime Minister and Cabinet Minister Vongsey Vissoth highlighted the transformative power of AI, stating that it has become a catalyst for growth and prosperity. “We see AI as a tool not only for innovation but also for inclusion and sustainability,” he said.
For Cambodia, digital technology is a key priority. The government is integrating technology as a cornerstone of its development strategy, ensuring that innovations like AI uplift all segments of society. “We are committed to leaving no one behind,” Vissoth added.
The symposium underscored the immense opportunities AI presents for enhancing China-ASEAN cooperation. Vissoth emphasized that China’s Global AI Governance Initiative aligns with ASEAN’s vision for multilateral collaboration, bridging regional and global aspirations.
“For ASEAN nations and China, AI offers unparalleled opportunities to overcome developmental barriers, tackle persistent challenges, and usher in a new age of prosperity, inclusiveness, and sustainability,” he said.
Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia Wang Wenbin echoed these sentiments, noting the strong foundation and vast potential for AI collaboration between China and ASEAN countries. “China is willing to strengthen cooperation in the development and governance of AI with ASEAN countries, including Cambodia,” Wang remarked.
The symposium marked a significant step toward deeper technological ties, with participants expressing optimism about the future of AI in driving regional growth and cooperation.
