China announced on Tuesday that it will impose visa restrictions on certain United States personnel in response to recent U.S. actions related to Hong Kong.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated at a regular press conference that the decision targets U.S. individuals who have behaved “egregiously” on Hong Kong-related issues. This move comes after the U.S. revealed plans to introduce new visa restrictions on multiple Hong Kong officials associated with implementing the Hong Kong national security law.
“We’ve made clear our serious position on relevant moves of the U.S. side,” Mao emphasized. She asserted that the U.S. actions interfere with China’s internal affairs and violate principles of international law and basic norms governing international relations.
Mao highlighted that China’s decision aligns with the Law on Foreign Relations of the People’s Republic of China and the Anti-Foreign Sanctions Law of the People’s Republic of China.
The spokesperson reiterated that Hong Kong is part of China and that its affairs are purely internal matters. She urged the U.S. to respect China’s sovereignty and Hong Kong’s rule of law, calling for an end to any form of meddling in Hong Kong affairs.
“China remains unwavering in its determination to safeguard the nation’s sovereignty, security, and development interests, implement the ‘One Country, Two Systems’ policy, and oppose any external interference in Hong Kong’s affairs,” Mao concluded.
