Xinjiang Flying Tigers End 10-Game Losing Streak Against Liaoning

The Xinjiang Flying Tigers roared back to end a 10-game losing streak against the reigning Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) champions, the Liaoning Flying Leopards, with a stunning 125-105 victory in Urumqi on Wednesday.

Xinjiang started strong, building an early 14-7 lead in the first quarter. Despite Liaoning’s efforts to close the gap, including two back-to-back three-pointers by Zhang Zhenlin, the game was tied at 25-25 by the end of the quarter.

In the second quarter, Xinjiang’s offense caught fire. Qian Dello (Quentin) Peterson led the charge, and the team capitalized on Liaoning’s scoring drought to secure a 65-47 lead by halftime.

Liaoning rallied in the third quarter, outscoring Xinjiang 32-21. After Dez Wells sank two free throws to tie the game at 73-73, Xinjiang’s Qi Lin hit two crucial three-pointers, ensuring an 86-79 lead heading into the final quarter.

The fourth quarter belonged to Zhao Rui, who scored all 14 of his points in the final stretch. His dominant performance sealed the game for Xinjiang, expanding their lead beyond Liaoning’s reach.

“Although we won the game, we need to recognize our mistakes on the court so we can make better choices next time,” Zhao Rui told reporters after the game.

Liaoning’s head coach, Yang Ming, acknowledged the challenge posed by the revitalized Xinjiang team. “Under Liu Wei’s guidance, Xinjiang’s tough play style, especially in rebounding, defense, and transition, is unique. This change hasn’t been made by other teams,” he said.

The victory marks a significant turnaround for the Xinjiang Flying Tigers, signaling a shift in momentum as the CBA season progresses.
