China has condemned Canada’s recent sanctions on Chinese individuals, calling them an "ugly, hypocritical political stunt."
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning spoke at a regular press briefing on Thursday, responding to sanctions announced by Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly earlier this week. The sanctions target certain Chinese individuals for alleged human rights violations.
"China has made clear its just position on Canada’s decision," Mao said. "The whole thing is an ugly, hypocritical political stunt done by some Canadian political figures under the pretext of human rights to serve an unspeakable agenda and please the United States. This is quite apparent to many in the world."
Mao emphasized that China has lodged serious protests and expressed strong condemnation to the Canadian side. "We call on Canada to correct its wrongdoing at once," she added. "China will take all necessary measures to firmly safeguard our nation’s sovereignty, security, and development interests."
The diplomatic tensions come amid ongoing global discussions about human rights and international relations. China’s response highlights the complexities of these issues and the importance of dialogue between nations.
