United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed deep concern over escalating violence in Syria, urging all parties to de-escalate and respect the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. His spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, conveyed the message during a press briefing on Thursday.
“The Secretary-General is particularly concerned over the hundreds of Israeli airstrikes on several locations in Syria and stresses the urgent need to de-escalate violence on all fronts,” Dujarric said. He emphasized that the 1974 Disengagement of Forces Agreement remains in force and called on all parties to uphold their obligations to maintain stability in the region.
The conflict has intensified over the past two weeks, with the Israel Defense Forces announcing that they have severely damaged Syria’s air defenses, destroying over 90% of identified strategic surface-to-air missile systems. Hundreds of Israeli fighter jets have conducted coordinated strikes, targeting key military assets across Syria.
This surge in hostilities has led to a significant humanitarian crisis. According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), more than 1.1 million people have fled their homes amid reports of food and fuel shortages. Despite the challenges, UN agencies and partners continue to provide aid to affected areas where security conditions permit.
In a move to stabilize daily life, Syria’s interim authorities announced that all educational institutions will resume classes on Sunday. The reopening comes shortly after opposition forces, including Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, took control of Damascus, leading to the collapse of former President Bashar al-Assad’s government.
The new government’s spokesperson, Obaida Arnaout, declared that the constitution and parliament would be suspended during a three-month transition period. “A judicial and human rights committee will be established to examine the constitution and then introduce amendments,” Arnaout said.
Guterres highlighted the importance of supporting credible, orderly, and inclusive transitional arrangements in Syria. “While maintaining public order, it is imperative to back efforts that will lead to lasting peace and stability,” he stated.
