Chinese action game “Black Myth: Wukong” made a remarkable impact at The Game Awards 2024 in Los Angeles on Friday, clinching the Best Action Game award and the Players’ Voice award, which is voted for by fans.
Inspired by the classic Chinese novel “Journey to the West,” “Black Myth: Wukong” captivated audiences worldwide with its stunning visuals and immersive gameplay. Since its debut, the game has garnered widespread attention for its portrayal of ancient Chinese architectural sites and cultural elements.
Released on August 20, the game achieved unprecedented commercial success for a Chinese-developed title, generating $53 million in pre-sales and selling 4.5 million copies within the first 24 hours globally. Developed over six years by Game Science, “Black Myth: Wukong” is considered China’s first Triple-A game, marking a significant milestone for the nation’s gaming industry.
“The success of ‘Black Myth: Wukong’ not only showcases our outstanding gameplay but also sparks worldwide interest in traditional Chinese culture,” said Feng Ji, the game’s producer. “Games are products that allow players from all around the world to communicate, experience, and share joy.”
The game’s art design team drew inspiration from 36 landmarks across China, including the Jade Emperor Temple in Jincheng, Lingyin Temple in Hangzhou, and the Ten Thousand Buddhas Temple in Shanxi Province. By creating a virtual library of ancient Chinese architectural heritage, the game presents China’s stunning landscapes and historic sites in a seamless virtual experience.
In addition to its visual achievements, “Black Myth: Wukong” features authentic traditional Chinese music, including Shanbei storytelling—a national-level intangible cultural heritage in China characterized by three-stringed instruments and distinctive vocal styles.
The Game Awards 2024, streamed live to over 100 million viewers, is often referred to as “the biggest night in gaming.” “Black Myth: Wukong” was among six nominees for the event’s top prize, Game of the Year, ultimately awarded to “Astro Bot.”
