Three Gorges 30 Years of Power and Progress

Three Gorges Dam: 30 Years of Powering Progress

The Three Gorges Project, the world’s largest hydropower initiative, is celebrating 30 years since construction began. Over the past three decades, this monumental feat has generated more than 1.7 trillion kilowatt-hours of electricity, transforming energy production and environmental efforts.

Equivalent to saving 550 million tonnes of standard coal, the project’s electricity generation has significantly reduced carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 1.49 billion tonnes, according to China’s Ministry of Water Resources. This massive reduction highlights the project’s role in promoting sustainable energy and combating climate change.

Since its first hydropower generator became operational in July 2003, the Three Gorges Dam has not only been a powerhouse of electricity but also a guardian against natural disasters. It has intercepted floods nearly 70 times, showcasing its crucial role in protecting communities along the Yangtze River.

The dam has also revolutionized navigation on the Yangtze, one of China’s most important waterways. With a cumulative cargo throughput exceeding 2.1 billion tonnes, it has bolstered trade and transportation, contributing an average of 34.4 billion yuan ($4.78 billion) annually to the economy.

Beyond energy and commerce, the project has played a vital role in water management. By regulating and supplementing water flow for 2,732 days, the dam has provided over 360 billion cubic meters of water to the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. This effort has ensured reliable drinking water and irrigation for millions.

Environmental improvements are also notable in the Three Gorges Reservoir area. Daily sewage treatment capacity has increased by 1.58 million tonnes, while forest and grass coverage have expanded, with forest coverage now exceeding 50%. These enhancements have strengthened soil and water conservation, promoting a healthier ecosystem.

As the Three Gorges Project marks its 30th anniversary, it stands as a testament to innovation and progress, continuing to drive economic growth while fostering environmental sustainability.
