China’s Long March-8 Rocket Ready for Launch from New Commercial Spaceport

China is gearing up for a significant milestone in its space exploration efforts. The country’s new-generation medium-sized rocket, the Long March-8 (CZ-8), has been successfully moved to the launch area at China’s first commercial space launch site in Wenchang City, located in the southern island province of Hainan.

The transfer, which took place on Sunday afternoon at 1:44 p.m., marks a crucial step toward the rocket’s anticipated launch in the coming days. The Long March-8 will be the inaugural rocket to lift off from the newly constructed No. 1 launch pad at the Hainan Commercial Spacecraft Launch Site.

Developed by the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology under the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC), the Long March-8 utilizes environmentally friendly liquid propellant, emphasizing China’s commitment to green technology in space exploration. The rocket successfully completed a full rehearsal in early November, ensuring all systems are go for the upcoming mission.

The construction of the No. 1 launch pad began in July 2022 and was completed ahead of schedule. This launch pad will play a pivotal role in China’s expanding commercial space industry, which has seen remarkable growth from 800 billion yuan (approximately $110 billion) in 2019 to 1.9 trillion yuan in 2023. Industry experts predict the market could reach 2.34 trillion yuan by the end of 2024.

The forthcoming launch will not only showcase China’s advancements in space technology but also test the capabilities of its first commercial launch site following the maiden mission of a Long March-12 carrier rocket on November 30.

As China continues to make strides in space exploration, the successful launch of the Long March-8 could pave the way for more commercial space endeavors, inspiring young people around the world to look to the stars.
