Mexican Mayor Found Shot Dead with Three Others in Apparent Attack

A Mexican mayor and three others were found shot dead inside a vehicle on Sunday in the central state of San Luis Potosi, local authorities reported.

Jesús Eduardo Franco, the mayor of Tancanhuitz municipality and member of the ruling Morena party, was discovered alongside three victims inside the vehicle, according to the state prosecutor’s office.

“We deeply regret the death of our colleague Eduardo Franco,” wrote Morena party president Rita Rodriguez on social media platform X. “We ask authorities to reach the ultimate consequences and find those responsible.”

This tragic incident underscores the ongoing violence targeting local officials in Mexico. Dozens have been attacked amid the organized crime-related violence that has plagued the country in recent years.

Just last month, local media reported that Alejandro Arcos, a mayor in the southern state of Guerrero, was decapitated less than a week after taking office. His head was reportedly placed on top of a pickup truck.

Since the Mexican government deployed the army to combat drug trafficking in 2006, more than 450,000 people have been murdered and thousands have gone missing, according to official figures.

The escalating violence highlights the challenges facing Mexico in curbing organized crime and ensuring the safety of its public officials.
