Finance by Day, Hanfu Designer by Night: Macao’s Modern ‘Slashie’

By day, 25-year-old Tong Iok crunches numbers at her finance job in Macao. But once the clock strikes six, she dons flowing silk robes and intricate hair ornaments, immersing herself in the world of Hanfu—the traditional clothing of China’s Han ethnic group.

Tong is the epitome of a “slashie,” a term coined for individuals juggling multiple careers or passions simultaneously. While balancing spreadsheets is her profession, designing and promoting Hanfu is her true calling.

“Wearing Hanfu makes me feel connected to my heritage,” Tong says. “It’s a way to bring the beauty of our traditional culture into modern life.”

This year, as the council chairperson of the Macao Youth International Art and Culture Association, Tong organized an event inviting intangible cultural heritage enthusiasts from the Greater Bay Area. Together, they crafted heritage brooches, aiming to promote and preserve China’s traditional handicrafts.

“It’s amazing to see young people so interested in cultural heritage,” she remarks. “We are building bridges between the past and the present.”

Tong’s dual life highlights a growing trend among youth in Macao and beyond—embracing cultural roots while navigating contemporary careers. She hopes her journey will inspire others to explore and cherish their traditions.
