Mumbai, India — At least 13 people lost their lives when an Indian naval speedboat collided with a passenger ferry carrying more than 100 passengers off the coast of Mumbai on Wednesday. The ferry, en route to the popular tourist destination of the Elephanta Caves, capsized following the collision.
The Indian Navy confirmed the incident, stating, “An Indian Navy craft lost control while undertaking engine trials in Mumbai Harbour due to an engine malfunction. As a result, the boat collided with a passenger ferry, which subsequently capsized.”
Rescue operations were launched immediately by defense personnel. Many passengers were pulled from the water, but efforts continue to locate those still missing. The tragedy has sparked concerns over maritime safety in one of India’s busiest ports.
The Elephanta Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage site, attract thousands of visitors each year. This incident has cast a somber mood over the city, with authorities urging a thorough investigation to prevent future accidents.
