“Confident in Future”: President Xi’s Speech Inspires Macao Residents

President Xi Jinping’s recent speech has filled Macao’s residents with renewed confidence and optimism for the future. During the celebration of the 25th anniversary of Macao’s return to China, President Xi emphasized the success of the “One Country, Two Systems” policy uniquely tailored to Macao.

Speaking at the Macao East Asian Games Dome, President Xi highlighted the remarkable transformation Macao has undergone over the past 25 years. “Macao has seen earthshaking changes, and its international standing has significantly increased,” he said.

Since 1999, Macao’s GDP has grown sevenfold, and its per capita GDP now ranks among the world’s highest. The region boasts one of the safest environments globally, offers free education from kindergarten to senior high school, and enjoys an average life expectancy of 83.1 years.

Sam Hou Fai, the newly inaugurated chief executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region, expressed his confidence in the future. “With the strong support of President Xi Jinping and the central government, along with the united efforts of all residents, we will undoubtedly achieve even greater success in implementing ‘One Country, Two Systems’,” he said.

President Xi urged Macao’s government to leverage the advantages of the “One Country, Two Systems” policy to foster high-quality development. He called on Macao’s youth to become builders and successors of this cause. “The young people are the hope and future of Macao,” President Xi stated, noting his meetings with many outstanding young residents during his visit.

Lau Pun Lap, president of the Macau Economic Association, echoed the sentiments, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the fundamental principle of “One Country” to fully realize the benefits of “Two Systems”. “Without this foundation, ‘Two Systems’ would not exist,” he remarked.

Young professionals like Sun Zhaolong, a researcher at the Macau University of Science and Technology, are inspired by President Xi’s words. “This era requires the new generation to work hard,” Sun said. As part of the Macao Science-1 satellites program—the first space science satellite collaboration between the Chinese mainland and Macao—he is committed to contributing to aerospace development.

Luís Gomes, president of the Sports Bureau of the Macao SAR government, is confident in the mission ahead. “In the future, the Macao SAR will depend on the motherland, establish itself within the Greater Bay Area, and connect with the world, contributing to Chinese modernization with its unique strengths,” he stated.
