When Kariuki stepped off the plane in Beijing in 2017, he was filled with anticipation and curiosity. Leaving behind the vibrant landscapes of Kenya, he embarked on a journey that would open his eyes to a new world.
Embracing a New Culture
At Beijing Jiaotong University, Kariuki immersed himself in Chinese culture. “The traditions here are rich and fascinating,” he says. From celebrating the Lunar New Year to tasting local cuisine, he found himself exploring customs that were both different and surprisingly familiar.
Unexpected Similarities
“I was amazed at how family-oriented Chinese society is, much like in Kenya,” Kariuki notes. He discovered shared values like respect for elders and the importance of community, bridging the gap between his homeland and his new environment.
Adapting to the Climate
Adjusting to Beijing’s seasons was an adventure in itself. “Experiencing snow for the first time was incredible,” he recalls with a smile. The climate differences added to his growth, teaching him resilience and adaptability.
A Journey of Personal Growth
Living abroad has not only expanded Kariuki’s academic horizons but also enriched his personal life. “I’ve grown so much here,” he reflects. “China has become a second home.”
As Kariuki continues his studies, he encourages other young people to embrace opportunities abroad. “Stepping out of your comfort zone opens doors you never knew existed,” he advises.
