Guangdong’s High-Speed Rail Hits Record 600 Million Trips in 2024

Guangdong Province, a major economic hub in China, has reached a new milestone in transportation. In 2024, the province’s high-speed rail network handled a record-breaking 600 million passenger trips, according to the Guangzhou Railway Group.

There was a significant surge in trips between Guangdong and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. Over 27 million passengers traveled via the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong high-speed railway as of Saturday, marking a 37% increase from the previous year.

With more train routes connecting cities in mainland China and Hong Kong, travelers are increasingly using the high-speed rail for tourism, business, and visiting family. The growing passenger numbers reflect the strengthening ties and integration within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Zhang Zhe, director of the passenger transport department at Guangzhou Railway Group, stated that the massive passenger flow highlights the continuous progress in developing the Greater Bay Area.

The expansion of high-speed rail connectivity is not only boosting economic activity but also bringing people closer together, fostering cultural exchange and understanding among the region’s diverse populations.
