S Koreas Yoon to Submit Written Opinion to Court over Arrest Warrant

South Korea’s President Yoon Submits Defense as Arrest Warrant Looms

South Korea’s President Yoon Suk-yeol is pushing back against an arrest warrant issued over his brief imposition of martial law earlier this month. According to Yonhap news agency, Yoon will submit a written opinion and has appointed a defense counsel to the Seoul Western District Court.

Yoon’s lawyer, Yoon Kab-keun, a former prosecutor, stated that the president’s written opinion would be submitted to the court later today. The court is considering an arrest warrant requested by a joint investigation unit on charges of insurrection and abuse of power after Yoon allegedly ignored three summonses for questioning.

The president was suspended from his duties following the investigation unit’s request for an arrest warrant. Yoon has denied the allegations, insisting that his declaration of martial law was an “act of governance” meant to caution the opposition party against what he perceives as their misuse of legislative power.

The Seoul court will soon decide whether to issue the arrest warrant, a decision that could have significant implications for South Korea’s political landscape.
