Paddington Bear’s New Adventure Charms Chinese Audiences

Paddington Bear, the lovable, marmalade-loving bear from Peru, has returned to the big screen in China, capturing the hearts of fans on New Year’s Day 2025. “Paddington in Peru,” the third installment of the beloved film franchise, opened to an enthusiastic welcome, grossing over 10 million yuan ($1.4 million) on its first day.

The film’s release was celebrated with a grand premiere and a special reading and discussion event of Michael Bond’s original novel “A Bear Called Paddington” in Beijing. These events provided a heartwarming cultural experience for moviegoers, bridging literature and cinema.

Geraldine McCafferty, deputy head of mission at the British embassy in Beijing, praised Paddington Bear’s role in fostering cultural exchanges. “Paddington’s adventures resonate with audiences worldwide, and we’re delighted to see his impact here in China,” she said.

Since his debut in 1958, Paddington Bear has become a global icon, with the original book translated into over 40 languages. In China, the series has found a special place in the hearts of young readers. Bai Bing, general manager and senior editor-in-chief of China’s Jieli Publishing House, noted that more than 1.2 million copies have been published in simplified Chinese since 2010.

The success of “Paddington in Peru” reflects the enduring appeal of this charming bear and his adventures. As audiences across China embrace Paddington’s latest journey, the film continues to strengthen cultural ties and bring joy to fans old and new.
