China Prepares for 11.5 Million Railway Passengers on New Year’s Day

China’s railway network is gearing up to handle an estimated 11.5 million passenger trips on New Year’s Day, according to the China State Railway Group Co., Ltd. The anticipated surge comes as people across the country prepare to celebrate the arrival of the new year.

To accommodate the massive influx, the railway sector has added 342 additional trains on busy routes, bringing the total number of trains operating on Wednesday to 10,427. Authorities have also reinforced safety measures and enhanced services to ensure a smooth and efficient travel experience for passengers.

This bustling start to the year sets the stage for an even busier transportation season as the annual Spring Festival travel rush, known locally as chunyun, approaches. Train tickets for the travel rush went on sale Tuesday, and demand is expected to soar.

The Spring Festival, China’s most significant traditional holiday, will fall on January 29 this year. The chunyun period, renowned for its high transportation demand as millions journey home for family reunions, will run from January 14 to February 22.

With such substantial numbers on the move, China’s transportation networks face the formidable task of ensuring safety and efficiency. The railway sector’s proactive measures reflect a commitment to meeting the nation’s travel needs during this festive season.
