Novak Djokovic and Aryna Sabalenka, the top seeds at the Brisbane International, powered their way into the quarterfinals on Thursday, while China’s Yuan Yue faced an early exit.
Djokovic showcased his dominance against French veteran Gael Monfils, securing a 6-3, 6-3 victory and extending his perfect record against Monfils to 20-0. The Serbian star, aiming for his 100th career singles title, expressed his ambition: “I’ve never won the Brisbane International. Hopefully this is the year, that’s why I’m here.”
With precise serves and relentless pressure, Djokovic converted all his break points and delivered an ace when it mattered most, saving the only break point he faced.
On the women’s side, world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka battled past Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva in a challenging match, winning 7-6(2), 6-4. The two-time Australian Open champion continues her impressive run in Australia, boasting 24 wins and just one loss since early 2023.
Earlier in the day, China’s rising star Yuan Yue showed determination but fell to Ukraine’s Anhelina Kalinina 6-1, 6-4. Yuan put up a spirited fight but faced tough competition against the experienced Kalinina.
Looking ahead, Djokovic is set to face big-serving American Reilly Opelka in the quarterfinals, marking their first encounter. Sabalenka will meet Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic, who upset 10th seed Victoria Azarenka with a 6-4, 6-4 victory.
Defending men’s champion Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria is also in action, set to play against Australia’s Jordan Thompson.
