The Chinese government has expressed strong criticism towards Taiwan after the island’s authorities suspended reporters from a mainland Chinese newspaper. The Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council accused Taiwan’s leadership, under Lai Ching-te, of deliberately obstructing media exchanges across the Taiwan Strait.
Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the office, voiced concerns after Taiwan revoked the accreditation of a Fujian-based newspaper and its parent organization, alleging they were involved in “united front work.” Chen argued that such actions hinder mutual understanding and are a setback for peaceful relations.
“For over 20 years, the mutual stationing of journalists has significantly enhanced cross-Strait understanding,” Chen said. He described Taiwan’s move as a “regression” in media cooperation, urging the authorities to cease what he called “political manipulation.”
The exchange of journalists between China and Taiwan has been a key component in fostering dialogue and reducing tensions. Observers worry that restrictions on media could exacerbate misunderstandings and further strain relations between the two sides.
