South Korea witnessed dramatic scenes on Friday as investigators attempted, but ultimately failed, to arrest impeached President Yoon Suk-yeol. A standoff at Yoon’s residence in central Seoul forced the Corruption Investigation Office (CIO) to halt their efforts due to safety concerns.
The CIO had issued an arrest warrant for Yoon over his alleged attempt to impose martial law. When prosecutors and investigators arrived to detain him, they were confronted by presidential security service agents, leading to a tense standoff.
“Due to the ongoing standoff and concern for the safety of our personnel on-site, it was determined that executing the arrest warrant was effectively impossible,” the CIO said in a statement. They expressed deep regret over Yoon’s refusal to comply with legal procedures.
The CIO has stated that they will decide on future actions after further review. The failed arrest adds another layer of complexity to the already tumultuous political climate surrounding Yoon, who faces serious allegations related to his failed martial law bid.
