Malaysia’s PM Anwar Ibrahim Deepens Friendship with China in 2024

In a significant move to strengthen regional ties, Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim visited China from November 4 to 7, 2024. The visit comes as both nations celebrate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations and the China-Malaysia Year of Friendship.

During his visit, Anwar attended the 7th China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai, showcasing Malaysia’s commitment to international trade and collaboration. He engaged in talks with Chinese leaders to enhance bilateral cooperation, emphasizing the importance of mutual growth and understanding.

\”I consider President Xi Jinping more like a friend,\” Anwar stated, highlighting the close relationship between the two leaders. He praised China’s global initiatives as \”fundamental pillars\” in promoting global security, indicating Malaysia’s support for collaborative efforts in the region.

Looking ahead, Malaysia is set to assume the rotating chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2025. Anwar expressed his commitment to focusing on political stability and effective collaboration between countries within the ASEAN community.

The Prime Minister’s visit underscores Malaysia’s strategic approach to fostering strong relationships with neighboring countries. By deepening ties with China, Malaysia aims to enhance economic growth, regional security, and cultural exchange, benefiting not only both nations but the broader Southeast Asian region.
