Kei Nishikori Reaches Hong Kong Open Final After Shang Juncheng Retires

Japan’s tennis star Kei Nishikori has advanced to the men’s singles final at the ATP Hong Kong Open after China’s Shang Juncheng retired due to illness on Saturday.

The semifinal match was tightly contested, with both players holding serve until Nishikori led 4-3 in the first set. However, Shang began to feel unwell and decided to retire from the match.

“When I woke up this morning, I felt terrible all over,” Shang revealed after the match. “I felt the same yesterday and didn’t know how I won that match. Today, I reached my limit. Continuing could have damaged my body and future competitions.”

Nishikori expressed sympathy for his opponent. “I feel bad that Shang had to retire,” the Japanese veteran said. “He performed well even in such poor condition. I wish him a speedy recovery so he can compete in the Australian Open.”

This marks Nishikori’s first ATP Tour final appearance this year. He will face France’s Alexandre Muller, who came back to defeat Spain’s Jaume Munar 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-4 in the other semifinal.

The Hong Kong Open final promises to be an exciting clash as Nishikori looks to secure another title in his illustrious career.
