Guizhou’s Tujia Community Celebrates Laba Festival with Hearty Porridge

YINJIANG, Guizhou Province—Villagers in the Yinjiang Tujia and Miao Autonomous County of southwest China’s Guizhou Province gathered to celebrate the Laba Festival, a cherished tradition marking the beginning of preparations for the Lunar New Year.

The festival, which fell on January 7 this year, is renowned for the custom of sharing Laba porridge—a hearty dish symbolizing prayers for peace, prosperity, and good health in the coming year.

Locals came together to prepare the porridge, which consists of over ten carefully selected ingredients, including glutinous rice, peanuts, red beans, and dates. Each ingredient holds symbolic meaning, contributing to the festival’s rich cultural tapestry.

“We add 30 grams of red beans, 20 grams of Job’s tears, and six red dates to represent a vibrant and prosperous year ahead,” explained Zhang Lifang, a local resident. “The six dates signify smooth success in all endeavors.”

The meticulous preparation process is as much about community bonding as it is about tradition. Families and neighbors join in, cooking and sharing the porridge, reinforcing social ties and passing down customs to younger generations.

The Laba Festival not only preserves ancient rituals but also highlights the enduring spirit of unity among the Tujia people in Guizhou Province. As the aroma of the porridge fills the air, it serves as a warm reminder of the values that continue to bind communities together.
