China and Republic of the Congo Boost Ties Amid 60th Anniversary

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has continued the tradition of starting the year with a visit to Africa, reinforcing China’s enduring commitment to strengthening ties with the continent. For 35 years, Chinese foreign ministers have made Africa their first international destination of the year, highlighting the importance China places on its relationships with African nations.

In his current visit, Wang Yi is scheduled to visit four countries, including the Republic of the Congo. This visit comes as China and the Republic of the Congo approach the 60th anniversary of their diplomatic relations in 2024, marking nearly six decades of growing friendship and cooperation.

In 2022, bilateral trade between China and the Republic of the Congo reached $6.57 billion, showing a significant 22 percent increase from the previous year. This reflects the strengthening economic ties between the two nations.

The relationship has been bolstered by the signing of a memorandum of understanding in 2018 to jointly advance the Belt and Road Initiative, solidifying a deep and strategic partnership aimed at mutual development and prosperity.

Wang Yi’s visit is expected to inject new momentum into China-Republic of the Congo relations, further enhancing collaboration in various fields and contributing to the shared growth of both nations.
