Gaza City—Hamas has reiterated its demand that Israel fully halt its military operations in Gaza as a condition for the release of hostages, amid intensified negotiations mediated by Qatar and Egypt. The Islamist group’s stance remains a critical factor as both sides seek a potential ceasefire after weeks of conflict.
Negotiations have accelerated in recent days, with mediators striving to bridge the gap between Hamas’s insistence on an end to the Israeli assault and Israel’s demand for the unconditional release of hostages held since the outbreak of hostilities in October.
Hamas official Osama Hamdan, speaking at a press conference, emphasized that Israel bears responsibility for the stalled talks. “We maintain our position of requiring a complete cessation of aggression and a full withdrawal from areas invaded,” Hamdan stated, without divulging specifics of the ongoing negotiations.
Israel, on the other hand, accuses Hamas of obstructing the release of hostages. “Hamas is the only obstacle to the release of the hostages,” said Eden Bar Tal, director general of Israel’s foreign ministry. “Israel is fully committed to reaching a deal.”
The humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate. According to health officials, Israeli military strikes have resulted in numerous casualties across the Gaza Strip. Medical facilities are struggling to operate amid dwindling resources, prompting urgent calls for international assistance.
The conflict, which escalated after Hamas fighters entered Israeli territory in October, has drawn global attention. As mediators work tirelessly to broker an agreement, the international community watches closely, hoping for a resolution that spares further suffering for civilians on both sides.
