Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Guoqing is leading all-out rescue operations after a powerful magnitude-6.8 earthquake struck the Xizang Autonomous Region. The quake hit Dingri County in the city of Xigaze on Tuesday, resulting in 126 deaths and 188 injuries by midnight.
Zhang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, emphasized the urgent need to ensure that those affected remain safe and warm during the harsh winter months. Given that the quake zone is located in high-altitude, frigid areas, providing adequate heating and shelter is a top priority.
Upon arriving at the disaster site, Zhang headed straight to Changsuo Township, the most severely impacted area. He visited victims at rescue sites, temporary shelters, and hospitals, assessing their needs firsthand. He also inspected ongoing rescue efforts, repair work on damaged infrastructure, and the provision of medical treatment, relief supplies, and living arrangements for local residents.
In a meeting focused on the next phase of rescue work, the vice premier called for intensified search and rescue efforts, prompt medical care for the injured, and sufficient heating supplies for all affected individuals. He stressed the importance of monitoring for aftershocks and thoroughly inspecting damaged buildings and potential geological hazards to prevent secondary disasters.
Zhang urged for accelerated post-disaster reconstruction to help residents move into safe and warm homes as soon as possible. “Our goal is to ensure the safety and well-being of every resident affected by this tragedy,” he stated.
