Army Chief Joseph Aoun Elected As Lebanons New President

Lebanon Elects Army Chief Joseph Aoun as New President

Lebanon has elected Army Chief Joseph Aoun as its new president, bringing an end to a prolonged period of political uncertainty. In a parliamentary session held on Thursday, Aoun secured 99 votes out of 128 members of parliament, as reported by Lebanese TV channel Al Jadeed.

The presidential seat had been vacant since October 2022, following the end of former President Michel Aoun’s term—who is not related to Joseph Aoun. The country has been grappling with economic challenges and political instability during this time without a head of state.

In the first round of voting, Joseph Aoun fell short of the required two-thirds majority of 86 votes. The parliament then adjourned for two hours before reconvening for a second round, where a simple majority of 65 votes was sufficient for victory.

Joseph Aoun’s election is seen as a critical step towards restoring political stability in the Mediterranean nation. Many hope that his leadership will pave the way for addressing Lebanon’s pressing economic and social issues.
