Chinese Ambassador Honors Jimmy Carter at Memorial Service

Chinese Ambassador to the United States, Xie Feng, attended the memorial service for former U.S. President Jimmy Carter at the U.S. Capitol on Tuesday. Carter, the 39th president of the United States who served from 1977 to 1981, passed away on December 29, 2024, at the age of 100.

Earlier, Ambassador Xie visited the U.S. Department of State to express condolences over Carter’s passing. In a book of condolences, he wrote, “President Carter was a key promoter and decision-maker in establishing China-U.S. diplomatic relations. He made long-standing contributions to the development of bilateral ties and fostered friendly exchanges and cooperation between our two countries.”

“To this day, the people of both nations and the world continue to benefit from the peace and development resulting from the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the United States,” Xie added. “The Chinese people will always remember him.”

Jimmy Carter played a pivotal role in normalizing relations between China and the United States in 1979, a historic move that reshaped international relations and opened doors for cultural and economic exchanges.

The memorial service saw attendees from across the political spectrum and international community, all paying tribute to Carter’s legacy of diplomacy, human rights advocacy, and commitment to peace.
