Chinese Badminton Players Shine at Malaysia Open Quarterfinals
Chinese shuttlers put on a stellar performance at the Malaysia Open on Thursday, advancing to the quarterfinals in multiple categories.
In men’s singles, world No. 7 Li Shifeng battled past India’s H.S. Prannoy in a thrilling three-game match. Li dominated the first game 21-8, but Prannoy, ranked 26th, fought back to take the second game 21-15. In a nail-biting decider, Li clinched the victory 23-21 after Prannoy’s shot hit the net. Li is set to face Chi Yu-jen from Chinese Taipei in the quarterfinals.
The women’s doubles saw China’s Jia Yifan and Zhang Shuxian overcome the sixth-seeded Indian pair, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand Pullela, in three games. Despite it being only their third international event together, Jia and Zhang displayed excellent teamwork, closing out the match 21-19 in the final game to secure their spot in the last eight.
However, in men’s doubles, China’s second seeds Liang Weikeng and Wang Chang faced an upset. They were defeated by South Korea’s Kim Won Ho and Seo Seung Jae with scores of 21-17, 21-16, missing out on a place in the quarterfinals.
The quarterfinals promise exciting matches as Chinese players continue their quest for titles at the Malaysia Open.
