Wang Yi Pledges Stronger China-Africa Ties for a Shared Future

China is ready to work with Africa to build an “all-weather” China-Africa community with a shared future, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi announced on Thursday.

During a joint press conference with Nigerian Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar, Wang Yi emphasized China’s commitment to strengthening ties with African nations. “We are willing to work with Africa to ensure the Global Security Initiative takes root on the continent and to jointly build a peaceful and secure path to modernization,” Wang said.

He underscored China’s support for African solutions to African problems, stating, “The African people are the true masters of the African continent and have the wisdom, ability, and right to solve their own problems.”

Deepening China-Nigeria Relations

Wang Yi highlighted the significant progress in China-Nigeria relations under the guidance of both countries’ leaders. He outlined three key achievements:

  1. Elevated Partnership: The relationship has been upgraded to a comprehensive strategic partnership, marking a new chapter in bilateral ties.
  2. Strong Collaborative Platform: The first plenary session of the China-Nigeria Intergovernmental Committee has paved the way for enhanced cooperation and coordinated progress.
  3. Global Cooperation: Both nations have worked closely on international and regional affairs, promoting development and revitalization in the Global South.

“Over the past fifty years since establishing diplomatic relations, China and Nigeria have deepened their friendly and pragmatic cooperation based on mutual respect and equality,” Wang Yi stated. “This relationship has become a successful example of South-South cooperation and a benchmark for China-Africa cooperation.”

A Vision for the Future

Looking ahead, Wang Yi emphasized the need to maintain the “strategic nature” of China-Nigeria relations and to continue supporting each other on core concerns. He called for highlighting the “exemplary nature” of their relations by leading in cooperation and aligning their strengths to explore new areas such as clean energy, green minerals, finance, and more.

He also stressed the importance of expanding cooperation across various sectors, including trade, agriculture, culture, defense, science and technology, and space exploration.

“Through our joint efforts, the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Nigeria will have an even brighter future,” Wang Yi expressed confidently.

He concluded by reaffirming China’s readiness to collaborate with Africa in building a peaceful and secure path to modernization, strengthening bonds of trust, and injecting momentum into high-quality development and Africa’s modernization.
