China’s World No. 5 and Olympic gold medalist Zheng Qinwen is gearing up for the Australian Open with her sights set on a potential clash against defending champion Aryna Sabalenka. After finishing as runner-up last year, falling to Sabalenka 6-3, 6-2 in the final, Zheng is more determined than ever to claim the title.
“That final brings me a lot of good memories, but at the same time some pity and sadness because I didn’t take my chance,” Zheng reflected on her previous encounter. “It took me a while to recover from that loss, but I learned a lot. Each time I play against her, it’s better and better.”
Zheng expressed her readiness to face Sabalenka again, saying, “I am cool with meeting Sabalenka early in the tournament. I have to beat everyone if I want to be the champion, and she is a must-beat opponent. I don’t want to win the tournament without beating her. I like the challenge, and I am fully motivated in my training because I want to beat these opponents.”
The two players are in the same half of this year’s main draw, along with the USA’s Coco Gauff, setting the stage for some exciting matches. However, Zheng remains focused on her immediate challenge against Romanian qualifier Anca Todoni in the first round.
“I know Anca Todoni is tall and has a good serve. I can only prepare myself as well as possible for the opening round, as I don’t have too much information on her,” Zheng said. “It’s going to be the first Grand Slam of the year. I have to get myself ready before thinking too much about my opponent.”
Zheng’s determination and positive mindset indicate that she is ready to take on the world’s top players at the Australian Open. Fans around the globe are eagerly anticipating her performances in Melbourne.
