Trump Revives Controversial Proposal to Buy Greenland from Denmark

Washington, D.C. – U.S. President Donald Trump has reignited international debate with his renewed interest in purchasing Greenland from Denmark. The Arctic territory, known for its vast ice-covered landscape and rich mineral resources, has once again become the center of geopolitical discussion.

President Trump stated that acquiring Greenland would be strategically beneficial for the United States due to its abundant natural resources and its strategic location in the Arctic. “It’s essentially a large real estate deal,” Trump told reporters. “A lot of things can be done. It’s hurting Denmark very badly because they’re losing almost $700 million a year carrying it. So they carry it at a great loss, and strategically for the United States, it would be nice.”

The idea was met with immediate resistance from Danish officials. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen responded by saying, “Greenland is not for sale. Greenland is not Danish. Greenland belongs to Greenland. I strongly hope that this is not meant seriously.”

Greenland’s government also weighed in, emphasizing their autonomy and national interests. “We’re open for business, but we’re not for sale,” said Greenland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement.

The proposal has sparked discussions about the United States’ interests in the Arctic region, especially as melting ice opens new navigation routes and access to untapped natural resources. The strategic military significance is also notable, with the U.S. already maintaining Thule Air Base in northern Greenland.

International reactions have been mixed, with some viewing the proposal as a bold strategic move, while others see it as an affront to Danish sovereignty. For now, the prospect of Greenland changing hands remains highly unlikely, but the conversation highlights the growing geopolitical importance of the Arctic.
