The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) has announced the winners of its 2024 Outstanding Science and Technology Achievement Prize, honoring two exceptional scientists and 14 groundbreaking scientific achievements. These innovations not only push the boundaries of science but also inspire the next generation of thinkers and innovators around the world.
Meet the Trailblazers
Chen Liquan from the Institute of Physics at the CAS received the Individual Achievement Award. An academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Chen has dedicated over 40 years to lithium battery research since 1976. He pioneered the field of solid-state ionics in the Chinese mainland and led early efforts in lithium battery research and development. His work has been crucial in advancing the technology behind the batteries that power our smartphones, laptops, and electric vehicles.
Chen Xianhui, an academician of the CAS from the University of Science and Technology of China, was also honored with the Individual Achievement Award. He’s made significant strides in quantum materials, including Kagome superconductors and magnetic topological insulators. His research is paving the way for future technologies in quantum computing, which could revolutionize how we process information.
Pioneering Projects
Awardees also include teams who have achieved remarkable breakthroughs:
- Understanding Our Galaxy and Beyond: Studies on the early formation and evolution of the Milky Way are helping us comprehend our place in the universe.
- Unveiling Mars’ Secrets: Multidisciplinary research has offered new insights into water activity and environmental changes on Mars, bringing us closer to the possibility of interplanetary exploration.
- Clean Energy Innovations: An advanced compressed air energy storage system developed by CAS researchers operates without fossil fuels, setting new records and contributing to sustainable energy solutions.
- Protecting Vital Farmlands: Efforts to mitigate farmland degradation and improve soil fertility in black soils are crucial for food security and sustainable agriculture.
Inspiring the Future
The Outstanding Science and Technology Achievement Prize of CAS, established in 2002, celebrates significant contributions to science and technology. For young people in the Global South, these achievements highlight the importance of innovation and the impact that dedicated research can have on society and the planet. As the world faces challenges like climate change, energy demands, and food security, these pioneering efforts demonstrate how science and technology can offer solutions and inspire change.
