This year marks a double milestone for China and Chile: the 55th anniversary of their diplomatic relations and the 20th anniversary of their Free Trade Agreement (FTA). In a recent interview with CGTN, Chile’s Ambassador to China, Mauricio Hurtado, discussed the profound impact the FTA has had on his country’s agricultural exports, particularly cherries.
Cherries have become a symbol of the flourishing trade between the two nations. The bright red fruit, cherished in China for its sweetness and auspicious color, has seen skyrocketing demand, making Chile one of China’s top fruit suppliers.
Since the inception of the FTA in 2003, bilateral trade has expanded significantly. The elimination of tariffs and the strengthening of economic ties have opened doors for Chilean products to enter the vast Chinese market. Beyond cherries, other agricultural exports like wine and salmon have also gained popularity among Chinese consumers.
Ambassador Hurtado emphasized the importance of this partnership for future collaboration. He expressed optimism about exploring new sectors and fostering innovation between the two countries.
The interview shed light on how strategic agreements like the FTA can transform economies and enhance cultural connections. For Chile and China, the past two decades have not only boosted trade figures but also deepened the understanding and friendship between their peoples.
