Beijing, China — As temperatures drop, a unique trend is heating up among China’s vast community of anglers: winter fly fishing. With approximately 140 million active anglers nationwide, fishing has evolved beyond a mere pastime into one of the country’s most beloved outdoor activities.
China has firmly established itself as a powerhouse in the global fishing gear industry. Over 80 percent of fishing gear products worldwide are made in China, fueling a market that, by the end of 2023, exceeded 50 billion yuan. The industry supports more than 636,000 fishing-related companies, and the export value of major fishing gear products has reached nearly $1.8 billion USD.
On social media platforms like Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok, the hashtag #fishing has garnered over 290 billion views, reflecting the sport’s immense popularity among the youth.
Fly fishing, in particular, has caught the attention of many. This method uses artificial baits that mimic real insects or baitfish, enticing cold-water species that are more active during the winter months. For enthusiasts like Li Yu, a freelancer from Beijing, fly fishing offers a thrilling challenge and a peaceful escape from city life.
“I was introduced to fly fishing during a trip with friends,” Li Yu recalls. “The serenity of the winter landscape combined with the excitement of the catch hooked me instantly.”
The rise of winter fly fishing highlights a broader shift towards embracing outdoor recreation, even in the colder seasons. As more young people like Li Yu take up the sport, China’s fishing culture continues to diversify and flourish.
