Italy’s Jannik Sinner and Poland’s Iga Swiatek have secured their spots in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, overcoming challenges to keep their Grand Slam aspirations alive.
Sinner Overcomes Illness to Advance
Jannik Sinner showcased remarkable resilience on Monday, battling through illness to defeat Denmark’s Holger Rune with a score of 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. The intense heat at Rod Laver Arena added to the 22-year-old’s struggles, as he experienced dizziness and required a medical timeout during the third set.
“I wasn’t feeling really well,” Sinner admitted after the match. “I think everyone saw that I was struggling physically.” Despite the setback, Sinner matched the Italian record set by Nicola Pietrangeli by reaching his 10th Grand Slam quarterfinal.
Looking ahead, Sinner will face Australia’s own Alex de Minaur, who defeated American Alex Michelsen 6-0, 7-6, 6-3, marking his first quarterfinal appearance at the Australian Open.
Swiatek Dominates to Keep Title Bid Alive
On the women’s side, World No. 1 Iga Swiatek continued her dominant performance, defeating Germany’s Eva Lys 6-0, 6-1. Swiatek, aiming for her first Australian Open title and sixth major trophy overall, has lost only 11 games in the tournament so far.
The 23-year-old displayed impressive form, closing out the first set in just 24 minutes. Lys, who entered the main draw as a lucky loser after replacing Anna Kalinskaya, managed to avoid a double bagel by winning a game in the second set, much to the crowd’s appreciation.
“I stayed focused and played my game,” Swiatek said after the match. “I’m happy with how I’m performing and looking forward to the next round.”
Swiatek will face American Emma Navarro in the quarterfinals as she continues her quest for the championship at Melbourne Park.
