Harvard Students Embrace Buddhist Traditions at Lingyin Temple

Over 40 students from Harvard University immersed themselves in Chinese culture on Wednesday during a visit to Lingyin Temple, a renowned Buddhist site in Hangzhou, east China’s Zhejiang Province. The group explored the temple’s rich history and sampled traditional vegetarian meals prepared by the monks.

“Experiencing the tranquility of Lingyin Temple and trying the vegetarian cuisine has been eye-opening,” said one of the students. “It offers a deeper understanding of Buddhist practices and Chinese traditions.”

The visit is part of a cultural exchange program aimed at fostering mutual understanding between students from different countries. The Harvard students engaged in discussions with the monks, learning about Buddhism’s influence on Chinese society and the importance of vegetarianism in Buddhist culture.

Lingyin Temple, founded in 328 AD, is one of the largest and most significant Buddhist temples in China. Its stunning architecture and serene environment attract visitors from around the world seeking spiritual enlightenment and cultural insights.

This experience allowed the students to connect with Chinese history and spirituality firsthand, enriching their global perspectives and appreciation for cultural diversity.
