China has confirmed that it allowed a Philippine vessel to deliver essential supplies to a grounded warship at Ren’ai Jiao in the South China Sea, emphasizing cooperation in maintaining regional stability. The resupply mission, which took place on Friday, was closely monitored by the China Coast Guard (CCG), ensuring that procedures were properly followed.
CCG spokesperson Liu Dejun stated that the Philippines used a civilian vessel for the mission, and China conducted verification and oversight throughout the process. “The CCG will continue rights protection and law enforcement activities in China’s Nansha Qundao, including Ren’ai Jiao, and its adjacent waters,” Liu said. (Nansha Qundao is also known as the Spratly Islands.)
Liu urged the Philippines to honor its commitments and work collaboratively with China to keep the maritime situation under control. The appeal highlights the ongoing efforts to ease tensions in the contested waters of the South China Sea.
The history of this issue dates back to May 1999, when the Philippines grounded the tank landing ship BRP Sierra Madre (LT-57) at Ren’ai Jiao. China immediately protested, requesting the immediate removal of the vessel. Despite assurances from the Philippine side to tow away the ship, it has remained at the location for over 25 years.
