In the vibrant stadiums of Rongjiang County, nestled in southwest China’s Guizhou Province, crowds cheer as village football teams showcase their skills. But beyond the thrilling matches of China’s Village Super League (VSL), a grassroots movement is unfolding, driving the nation’s modernization efforts.
Meng Aijun, a member of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), watches from the stands not just as an enthusiast, but as a keen observer seeking solutions for rural development. Last year, Meng proposed harnessing traditional culture and intangible heritage to enhance rural sports events, attracting tourism and boosting local economies.
The impact has been remarkable. Rongjiang welcomed nearly 9.26 million tourists last year, an increase of 21 percent, generating over 10.6 billion yuan (about $1.5 billion) in tourism revenue. This year, Meng is exploring how the VSL’s popularity can be sustained to support the local economy further.
“The VSL’s success is phenomenal, but we need to ensure this momentum continues. It requires deeper investigation and ongoing efforts,” Meng said.
His research led him to Baibei Village, once lacking basic amenities like water and electricity. Now, it’s a thriving tourist hotspot, thanks in part to the VSL. The village’s transformation highlights the potential of combining sports with traditional culture to drive rural revitalization.
The Power of Consultation
Meng’s dedication exemplifies the crucial role of the CPPCC in China’s modernization. Serving as a platform for consultative democracy, the CPPCC brings together members from various sectors to collaborate on national development.
Throughout the year, the CPPCC organized numerous events to discuss state affairs and issues, including special consultation sessions and expert meetings. This collaborative approach ensures that policies reflect the needs and aspirations of the people.
Championing Agriculture
Jiang Ming, another CPPCC member and agricultural expert, previously proposed developing high-standard farmlands, especially in northeastern China. His ideas received positive responses, and initiatives were set in motion to prioritize farmland development in key areas.
Continuing his advocacy, Jiang conducted extensive field research, visiting over 30 cities and counties. His proposals aim to overcome challenges in agricultural machinery and have been recognized among the top CPPCC contributions.
Driving Forward
As China continues its march towards modernization under the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025), the efforts of CPPCC members like Meng and Jiang highlight the importance of innovative ideas rooted in local realities. Their work ensures that the voices of the people are heard, and their aspirations are woven into the nation’s development strategies.
With dedicated individuals and collaborative platforms like the CPPCC, China continues its journey towards a modern and prosperous future.
