The legendary Chinese heroine Mu Guiying has been brought to life in a stunning shadow puppetry exhibition at the Nanchizi Museum in Beijing. The exhibition, titled “Dian Xi Yi Ben – Shadow Puppetry and Contemporary Art Exhibition,” showcases the intricate art of shadow puppetry, blending traditional techniques with contemporary creativity.
One of the highlights is the piece “Peach Blossom Horse,” created by Wang Haiyan, a fourth-generation inheritor of Wang’s shadow puppetry. Standing at an impressive 3.8 meters tall, the shadow puppet depicts Mu Guiying in full armor, holding a long spear with a commanding presence. The use of hollowed-out paper cuttings allows light to shine through, giving the artwork a majestic and lifelike quality.
Mu Guiying, a renowned figure from the Northern Song Dynasty over 1,000 years ago, is celebrated for her bravery and intelligence in the classic Chinese folk tale “Generals of the Yang Family Legends.” She has long been a symbol of courage and steadfast womanhood in Chinese culture, inspiring people for centuries.
The exhibition not only pays homage to traditional Chinese art forms but also aims to engage younger audiences by bridging the gap between ancient legends and modern artistic expression. Visitors have the opportunity to explore the rich history of shadow puppetry while appreciating its relevance in contemporary art.
