The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Eastern Theater Command has initiated joint military exercises around Taiwan Island, in what the Chinese mainland describes as a resolute response to secessionist provocations. The drills, which began on Tuesday morning, involve coordinated operations by the army, navy, air force, and rocket forces approaching Taiwan Island from multiple directions.
Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, stated that the exercises are a necessary action to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity. She criticized Taiwan leader Lai Ching-te, saying he persists in advocating for Taiwan secession and inciting anti-mainland sentiment, which has heightened tensions in the Taiwan Strait.
“Lai’s actions have obstructed cross-strait exchanges and escalated tensions,” Zhu said. “He has proven to be a destroyer of cross-strait peace and a creator of crisis in the Taiwan Strait.”
Emphasizing the Chinese mainland’s stance, Zhu declared that they will not tolerate such behavior. “China’s determination to resolve the Taiwan question and achieve national reunification is as firm as a rock, and no one or any force will be allowed to separate Taiwan from China,” she stated.
She also clarified that the countermeasures are aimed at secessionists and their activities, not the majority of Taiwan residents. Zhu expressed hope that the people of Taiwan would oppose secessionist forces and work towards national reunification and the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
Senior Colonel Shi Yi, spokesperson for the PLA Eastern Theater Command, confirmed the commencement of the joint exercises, highlighting the military’s readiness to safeguard national unity.
