In a bid to strengthen ties across the Taiwan Strait, a leading Chinese mainland official met with Taiwan’s Kuomintang (KMT) vice chairman on Wednesday. Song Tao, who heads the Taiwan Work Office of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, sat down with Andrew Hsia in the city of Xuzhou, located in east China’s Jiangsu Province.
Song emphasized the shared heritage between people on both sides of the Strait. “We’re family, not foes,” he remarked. He stressed that any efforts toward “Taiwan secession” are bound to fail and warned that those involved in separatist activities would face consequences. Song reiterated the commitment to the one-China principle and the 1992 Consensus, expressing a willingness to collaborate with the KMT and others in Taiwan to oppose separatism and external interference.
Andrew Hsia shared a similar outlook, stating that both sides of the Taiwan Strait are part of one China and that any differences can be overcome. “The Kuomintang is ready to promote peaceful growth of cross-Straits relations by adhering to the 1992 Consensus and opposing ‘Taiwan secession’,” Hsia affirmed.
The meeting highlights ongoing efforts to enhance communication and cooperation between the mainland and Taiwan, aiming for a peaceful and united future.
