In an electrifying first-round match at the World Snooker Championship in Sheffield, England, China’s 21-year-old sensation Lei Peifan stunned defending champion Kyren Wilson with a nail-biting 10-9 victory on Saturday.
The 33-year-old Wilson, ranked world No. 2, seemed in control after leading 6-3 following the morning session. However, Lei launched an incredible comeback in the evening session, capturing six consecutive frames to surge ahead 9-6.
Undeterred, Wilson showcased his championship resilience by fighting back to level the score at 9-9, setting the stage for a dramatic deciding frame. Staying composed under immense pressure, Lei clinched the final frame with an 80-14 score, sealing his momentous victory.
“It feels amazing,” Lei said after the match. “The Scottish Open was my first title, and this was my Crucible debut. Both moments are very special to me.”
Lei made headlines last December when he secured his first ranking title at the Scottish Open. His performance at the Crucible Theatre further cements his status as one of snooker’s rising stars.
Wilson acknowledged the tough loss but reflected positively on his season. “It’s hard to take, but it’s been a long season with many achievements,” he remarked.
Next up, Lei will face the winner of the match between China’s Zhao Xintong and Wales’ Jak Jones in the second round, as he looks to continue his impressive run at the championship.
