Over 10,000 people gathered in Putian, Fujian Province, on April 20, 2025, to celebrate the 1065th birthday of Mazu, the beloved folk goddess of the sea.

The grand sacrificial ceremony attracted local residents as well as devotees from around the world, including representatives from Mazu temples globally.

In 2009, the belief in Mazu was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage, highlighting its importance in cultural preservation.

The annual celebration not only honors the goddess but also strengthens community bonds and promotes cultural exchange among believers worldwide.

“Participating in the Mazu birthday celebration is a way for us to connect with our roots and share our traditions with others,” said one attendee.

The event underscores the enduring legacy of Mazu and her significance in maritime cultures across Asia.
