Ancient Silk Manuscripts Come Alive in New Documentary

A brand-new cultural documentary series titled “The Legend of Silk Manuscripts” has premiered, offering viewers an unprecedented look into China’s oldest silk manuscripts. Co-produced by China Media Group (CMG) and the National Cultural Heritage Administration, the series debuted on April 23 on CMG’s CCTV-1 and is available on the streaming service Yangshipin and other platforms.

This groundbreaking production marks the first time that China’s ancient silk manuscripts have been the central focus of a documentary. “The Legend of Silk Manuscripts” draws on the latest archaeological discoveries to bring these precious relics to life.

The series showcases remarkable artifacts such as the Chu silk manuscripts and silk paintings unearthed in Changsha, Hunan Province; the famed Han Dynasty silk texts from the Mawangdui tombs, which are over 2,000 years old; and silk letters from the postal relay station in Dunhuang, Gansu Province.

Through these rare finds and rich historical and scholarly sources, the documentary offers fresh interpretations of China’s ancient heritage. It blends storytelling and innovation to unveil the profound wisdom and cultural spirit embedded in the manuscripts, providing a captivating journey into the past for audiences.
