China and Brazil Unite Against Bullying, Champion Multilateralism

Rio de Janeiro — Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with his Brazilian counterpart Mauro Vieira on Tuesday, emphasizing the need for China and Brazil to stay committed to multilateralism and reject unilateralism and acts of bullying. Wang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, highlighted that both nations should uphold free trade, oppose protectionism, and prevent the law of the jungle from prevailing.

The meeting occurred as Wang attended the Meeting of BRICS Ministers of Foreign Affairs/International Relations in Rio de Janeiro. He is also scheduled to participate in the 15th Meeting of BRICS National Security Advisers and High Representatives on National Security in Brasília on Wednesday.

Wang expressed China’s full support for Brazil in fulfilling its duties as this year’s BRICS chair. He emphasized boosting greater BRICS cooperation, strengthening the BRICS voice on the global stage, and upholding the legitimate rights and interests of countries in the Global South.

Vieira conveyed Brazil’s readiness to work closely with China to maintain high-level exchanges and expand practical cooperation in areas such as economy and trade, space, science and technology, and health. He noted that the international landscape is fraught with complex factors and that multilateralism and free trade are under serious attack. Vieira stressed the importance for Brazil, China, and other BRICS countries to strengthen solidarity and coordination to jointly tackle global challenges.

The discussions underscore a mutual commitment to promoting a more equitable international order and addressing pressing global issues through collaborative efforts.
