Amazon Backs Down on Tariff Pricing Plan After Criticism

Amazon has withdrawn its plan to display import charges on product prices following criticism from the White House. The e-commerce giant had considered listing tariffs on certain China-made products but decided against it after the White House labeled the move a “hostile and political act.”

Earlier reports suggested that Amazon intended to show how U.S. tariffs were impacting prices on its main website. This prompted White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt to urge Americans to “buy American” and question why Amazon hadn’t highlighted inflation under previous administrations.

The initial news caused a 2% drop in Amazon’s shares. In response, Amazon clarified that while its low-cost Haul unit had explored displaying import charges, the idea was ultimately rejected.

President Donald Trump reportedly called Amazon founder and executive chairman Jeff Bezos to express his concerns. “He solved the problem very quickly. He did the right thing,” Trump told reporters.

The U.S. has imposed a series of tariffs on trading partners, including China, leading to increased costs for many companies. Retailers like Best Buy have expressed worries about the additional expenses and potential disruptions to their supply chains.
