Global Poll Reveals Rising Anti-American Sentiment Over Tariff Policies
A recent global poll indicates that the United States’ tariff policies are fueling a surge in anti-American sentiment worldwide. Conducted by CGTN in collaboration with the Institute of International Communication at Renmin University of China, the survey encompassed 15,947 respondents across 38 countries.
The findings reveal that 74.2% of global respondents believe U.S. tariff policies will significantly hinder their own countries’ economic development, marking a 16.3 percentage point increase over the past two months. Countries like Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Greece, and Chile showed the most significant rises in opposition to U.S. tariffs.
In regions heavily impacted by these policies—such as Vietnam, the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia—opposition has intensified notably. Among respondents from these countries, over 60% expressed concerns that U.S. trade measures, like tightening export controls and imposing unilateral sanctions, are detrimental to their national progress.
Notably, the discontent isn’t confined to the international community. Within the United States, a majority of respondents expressed worries about the negative impacts of tariff policies on daily life. Over half believe these policies undermine the stock market and increase the cost of industrial raw materials, while many are concerned about potential strains on household budgets and agricultural exports.
China’s countermeasures in response to the tariffs have gained substantial global support. In 37 of the 38 countries surveyed, respondents showed more support than opposition for China’s actions. Support was particularly strong in developing countries like Kenya, Egypt, Turkey, and Brazil, with Kenya leading at an 82.5% support rate. Among developed countries, the United Kingdom led with a 70.5% support rate for China’s response.
The poll reflects a shared global consensus on the importance of upholding the international trade order. As concerns over tariff policies grow, there’s an increasing call among nations to promote fair and cooperative economic practices worldwide.
